The Third International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music was held from 21st to 24th September 1999 in Krakow. After three days of audition, the international Jury under honorary chairmenship of Krzysztof Penderecki, including Professor Marek Stachowski, Ivan Monighetti, Mary Stolper, Marta Ptaszyńska and Geoffrey Madge, elected award winners from among 60 chamber music soloists and bands from eleven countries of the world. The Grand Prix in the amount of PLN 25,000 was awarded to Josep Sancho (Spain). The Special prize for the best performance of a Polish composer's work, in the amount of PLN 10,000 and the 1st prize in the trio category, in the amount of PLN 5,000, for the - The Medusa's Head I - work of Witold Szalonek was awarded to the trio from Germany. The First Prize in the category of soloists (PLN 3,000) was awarded to Jacek Pawelec (percussion), and in the category of duets to Josep Sancho and Lila Gailling. The total amount of prizes exceeded PLN 80,000.

 

The  fairness of the verdict could be verified during the Gala Concert in Juliusz Slowacki Theatre. Apart from the first prize winners in particular categories: Ivan Monighetti (an excellent violoncellist, the last disciple of Mscislaw Roztropowicz), Mary Stolper (a well known American flutist who played a very original work: "Vermont Counterpoint" of Ransom Wilson, with three different flutes) and AGH Modern Form Ballet managed by choreographer, Jerzy Maria Birczynski , the special guest also participated in this concert. 

The third edition of the Competition was held under the Honorary Patronage of the Polish Republic Prime Minister, Jerzy Buzek, Minister of National Education, Miroslaw Handke, Deputy Minister of Culture and Art, Jacek Weiss, the Mayor of Krakow , Andrzej Golas, the Malopolskie Province Head, Ryszard Maslowski and the Malopolskie Province Speaker, Marek Nawara.

 

Professor Krzysztof Penderecki, in the press conference on 24th September 1999, directed the journalists' attention to the very high skills level of participants as well as to the high organisational level of the competition. He laso highlighted the enormous significance of the competition for the promotion of young artists and of popularisation of the Polish modern music worldwide. He remarked that this was one of the very few modern music competitions, which has the chance of becoming and is becoming the most important and the most prestigious competition in the world.

 

Among the famous journalists and artists, the Gala Concert gathered also: Deputy Minister of the National Defence, Romuald Szeremietiew, Deputy Minister of Culture and Art, Jacek Weiss, Deputy Minister of the National Education, Andrzej Karwacki, the Head of Malopolskie Province, Ryszard Maslowski, Deputy Speakers of the Malopolskie Province, Consul General for Austria, United Kingdom, Mexico and Hungary.
