The second edition of Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music took place from 25th to 29th September 1998 under the honorary patronage of Jerzy Buzek, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland. Fifty-five soloists and chamber groups entered the competition but only twenty-six were admitted to the final audition.The Jury chaired by Prof. Krzysztof Penderecki, including:

recognised the level of the competition to be very high. The laureates, Kwartet ¦l±ski (Silesian Quartet) and the Silesian Dance Theatre performed in the Gala concert. The concert was opened with a speech by Jacek Weiss, Deputy Minister of Culture and Art, who, on behalf of the organisers, handed the - For the Patron of Polish Culture - statuette to the hands of Kazimierz Trębacz, the President of Rafineria Trzebinia S.A. and to the hands of Ludwik Bernacki,Naftobudowy Holding S.A.

Special Prize for the best performance of a Polish composer's piece of music was awarded to: Elżbieta Zygadło (piano) and Małgorzata Kogut (violin) for the performance of Krzysztof Penderecki's Three Miniatures.
Special Prize for the best interpretation of a Polish composition: Paweł Kubica for Masks by Karol Szymanowski.
Special Award of the PLL Lot Polish Airlines: Sławomir M¶cisz (percussion).
