The script of the "Cantigas de Santa Maria" is based  on Alfonso X el Sabio, the King of Castile's songs, which focused on God's great influence on the lives of the main characters of the story.

These unusual cantos about the chance of diverting seemingly inevitable fate, about those cured from disability, regrowing hands and punishing wickedness are suggestive description of  unpredictable world.

Alfonso X composed remarkable and modern  music, which in the interpretation of invited guests went into a totally new and revealing dimension.

Maciej Maleńczuk - an outstanding artist decided to take the challange and face repertoire which was entirely new to him. Besides him, Paweł Iwaszkiewicz  is a part of that project. As a composer, performer and arranger specialized in performing old-time music. Singer Wanda Laddy was the next invited guest as well as drummer Kuba Rutkowski and Paweł Muzyk playing on the viola da gamba.

The meeting of these artists was a chance for finding an entirely new dimension in King Alfonso's music. Even though the King is one of the most popular old-time music authors, his plays still can inspire different artists as well as the audience.

Alfons X M±dry (Alfonso X the Wise) 1221-1284, the oldest son of Saint Ferdinand III and Beatrice (a daughter of the emperor Philip of Swabia).

From 1252 he was the King of united Castile and León. After his father's death he continued the reconquista in the southern part of Iberian Peninsula.

After conquering Cádiz in 1262 he tried to transfer the war with Muslims to northern Africa. In 1257 he was acclaimed in Frankfurt am Main as the King of Germany. Though he never set out for Germany till 1275 he was spending his time and money on imperial ambitions.

As a ruler he showed legislative capacity, and provided his kingdoms with a code of laws and a consistent judicial system. In Toledo he established a council of Christian, Judaic and Muslim scientists, who translated the Bible and other Arabic writings into Castilian and compiled astronomical encyclopedia. Alfonso X the Wise is famous for the preparation of the Alfonsine Tables (astronomical tables) as well as the first book about the history of Spain (Estoria de Espana) and modern history (Cronica general and Gran y general estoria).

He was also a recognized poet. In addition to his other achievements, Alfonso X commissioned or co-authored numerous works including the Cantigas de Santa Maria - songs devoted to the Virgin Mary (also in Galician). It is believed that he also composed the music to those songs.

A CD is the next stage of the Teatr 38 project.
